Kanbar College Spring Series
The Kanbar College Spring Series is an event celebrating the successful launch of the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, and the opening of its new home, the DEC Center. The event will take place in three parts on January 9, February 22, and March 21-22 and will focus on innovation and the future of higher education.
Background: Our Transformational Journey
In recent years, Philadelphia University has pursued an integrated group of transformative structural innovations that challenge the normative models that have shaped colleges and universities for over a century.
The University’s new matrix college organization and redesigned faculty governance create responsive, efficient and effective systems at the core of the institution. A new academic development process unique to higher education drives academic innovation and weaves our curricula together into transdisciplinary ecosystems of learning experiences.
The most ambitious of these transformations, the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, provides students in 16 different majors a common core curriculum that teaches them from their first day of class as freshmen to innovate by stressing teamwork, opportunity finding, value creation, field research and systems thinking.
Why Celebrate Now?
Spring 2013 is the ideal time to celebrate the success of the Kanbar College. The College leadership is in place, the core curriculum has launched, the founding $15 million gift has been generously donated by Maurice Kanbar, and the spectacular new DEC Center officially opens for classes in January 2013. The theme of the event both supports and reflects the central foci of Kanbar College: innovation, integration and application.
The event consists of three parts distributed through the spring semester: an inaugural lecture for the new DEC Center building on January 9; an internal, faculty-led, day-long workshop for the Philadelphia University community on February 22; and a summit on March 21-22 that brings together leading change agents who are driving innovation in and beyond academia.
